greenmonkey® Method Power Class

IMG_6567Since November you may have experienced a change in our all levels power vinyasa class, as well as in many of our power yoga basics classes. With your health and fitness goals in mind,we have been in development of a new sequence that our teachers have been playing with and are now executing proficiently at our greenmonkey® locations. We are thrilled to share with you and to include you among the first to hear about what we have been cooking up for you. We, your greenmonkey® Team, have unlocked the secret to offering you the absolute best yoga program with a complete and cutting-edge fitness strategy, while continuing to deliver a powerful and inspiring message to support you to Live your Practice™ on and off the mat. Exciting, right? You may be asking how it works—We have been in development of a knowledge-driven program based on sound research and physiological principles for optimal training of the human body that utilizes yoga as the vehicle since June of 2014. There will be even more coming your way and you’ll have all the details soon!

In the meantime, please continue to enjoy this new greenmonkey® Method Power Class that is based on the forthcoming greenmonkey® Yoga Method. This class is designed to challenge the musculoskeletal system in all planes of motions (sagittal, frontal, and transverse), as well as all directions of motions (too many to name, but we can share all of that with you if you are interested in our Yoga Body Module). In addition, the transitions in this class are not like the usual way in which we move throughout a vinyasa class, so we are also challenging the brain and creating new neuronal pathways.

We have all been drawn to yoga for a variety of great reasons, and we are excited to be at the forefront of the industry where we deliver an innovative physiological class that is both inspirational and informative. For more information on a little of the science behind our program, please check out our published academic research papers. As a result of our scientific research with the University of Miami, we now know that this training not only increases core muscle utilization (Ni et al., Complement Ther Med. 2014), but it also improves balance, coordination, and agility (Ni et al., Arch Phys Med Rehab, 2014). The postures and sequences in the greenmonkey® Yoga Method Class are designed to train and develop your muscles to help you perform everyday activities safely and efficiently so that you will be better equipped to meet the everyday demands of living and improve your quality of life. Functional exercise training is also beneficial for older adults, as it improves balance, agility, and muscle strength, thereby reducing the risk of falls (Kendrick et al., Cochrane Database Syst Rev, 2014; Ni et al., Arch Phys Med Rehab, 2014; Schmid et al., Arch Phys Med Rehab, 2010).

The class can also be very challenging in nature, as many of you have already experienced for yourselves. As a result, practicing it gives us the capacity for more caloric expenditure. We want the greenmonkey® Method Power Class to dictate the physical work and the core temperature of your body, rather than the external heat determining how much work you can do. Consequently, we have changed the temperature of the classes to 82-85 degrees. We have heard, though, that most of you feel like you are sweating more—that’s because you are doing more work! This temperature selection is based on our commitment to our research-driven programming, and it creates an optimal environment for well-being. We believe this temperature to be ideal to achieve the best physical results and still deliver you an experience that you know and love.

And just FYI: temperatures that are too high invite higher levels of dehydration and an inability to do the physical work that would be possible in a tepid room. Studies have also shown that there are no additional caloric expenditures practicing in heated rooms and that the ability to do the physical work actually can decrease when a room is too hot, therefore possibly reducing caloric expenditure. Really, the best way to increase temperature in the body is from the inside out.

Ok, so what does all this mean? You will be seeing a change in our scheduling title from “all levels power vinyasa” to “greenmonkey® Method Power Class” and from “power yoga basics” to “greenmonkey® Foundations Class” that will have new descriptions stated below. Aside from this distinction, we are still the same place, community, and people that we have always been. Please come in and enjoy the class if you have not already, and let us know your feedback, as we love hearing from you about how we can continue to powerfully serve you! Our promise to you remains the same—simply that we will bring to you the very best yoga classes where you will be challenged to be your very best. We are grateful to you for inspiring us to be our best.
